The primary and foremost work of the Holy Spirit when He comes to reside in us is to conform us to the image of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Many Christians especially in the charismatic community seek the Lord primarily for the gifts and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. But besides the nine gifts/manifestations of the Holy Spirit that are found in 1 Corinthians 12, we are also instructed about the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit that are found in the book of Galatians chapter 5. More important than what we can do for God is who we are in God.
“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first born among many brethren.” (Romans 8:29)
We cannot get around the fact that Jesus made it very clear to His disciples and apostles that they were not to leave the city of Jerusalem, they were not to move ahead until they were filled with the Holy Spirit. What does that look like and what did that mean?
“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” Luke 24:49
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”Acts 1:8
